Lukáš Hejlík likes to travel and eat a lot. We like to read his reviews and try out the places he recommends. And since we missed Lukáš’s Gastromapa for our phones, we decided to create it ourselves.

Basically, we developed the assignment ourselves. We proposed a way that didn’t create more work for Lukáš Hejlík while adding significant value.

We didn’t really like the way the online Gastromapa looked. And if you’ve ever tried to find a review of a specific place on Facebook, you’ll surely agree that it takes time and it wouldn’t really be your choice when you’re already hungry. What to do about it, though?

All the data in the app is gained through Facebook API and aggregated and processed in our own back-end. At the beginning, Facebook wasn’t too willing to share its data (information about the restaurants), but eventually we managed to give sufficient reasons for our needs and got access to the information.

It was necessary to not add much work for Lukáš Hejlík.And the requirement for minimum extra work applied to money as well; there was virtually no budget.Lukáš is used to working with Facebook; after all the data leaks, however, the Facebook API is quite limited.

Reviews on Facebook

Lukáš publishes reviews on Facebook. When he tags a place and adds several hashtags, we process the post and insert it into the app.

Popular not only in our office

Gastromapa is popular not only in our office. Fans sponsored the development of the app by purchasing it upon opening (today it’s available for free with the option to donate), and the rest was covered by a sponsor in return for advertising.

Unique acess to data

It took one month of emailing with Facebook to convince them that the only voting we wanted to influence was about where to have dinner. And now we have access to the data about those places.

Swift & Kotlin

Development for Android done in Kotlin on the MVVM architecture, while for iOS it was developed in Swift and MVVM-C. The back-end was written in PHP and runs on Czech rosti.cz. Businesses and reviews are saved in a MySQL database, and the API by Seznam Mapy helps us find the addresses.

Feedback

In the app, we focused heavily on user feedback. In addition to standard system elements, we also used the Lottie library for animating, as it takes care of comprehensive animations which make a much better impression during interaction with the user interface.

People love it

Based on reactions on social networks, people simply love the mobile Gastromapa, and it’s already been downloaded by more then 100 000 users.

Now we’re working on a new website that will look better and will be easier to work with.
