Make the process of handing over online orders as simple as possible!

Make the process of handing over online orders as simple as possible!

The assignment was clear: create an app to simplify the entire process, from reception of orders in store to handing the products over to the customer.

The customer buys or orders products in the online shop and chooses a physical shop to pick them up at. Of course, the customer can select the option to pay only after they have tried out the products. At the shop, the customer provided the clerk with a unique code they received via email. The whole pick-up process was more or less manual up to this point and many easily avoidable mistakes had been made. And that’s where our app came in.

The assignment was clear: create an app to simplify the entire process, from reception of orders in store to handing the products over to the customer.

You don’t have to be an expert to imagine the various services and information needed to get the ordered products to the customer. That’s why we had to adjust and generalize the logic of a number of microservices Decathlon had been using. From there, we created a simple, intuitive UI that transformed all the services into a simple app to speed up the entire process of handing over the ordered products.

When taking the project over, we didn’t know the buying behaviour of its users.Working with orders was time-consuming and complicated. It was impossible to return the order directly to the shop.

Highlights

01

Payment

Now, making and checking payments is taken care of by the app. We’ve also added some new useful options.

02

Whole process

The app now takes care of the entire ordering process, from stocking up to handing the products over to the customer.

03

Easy cancellation

We’ve made the cancellation process more streamlined and even added more options that had been impossible to use or too complicated beforehand.

01

No more errors

The employees used to enter prices manually into an outdated terminal and often made the mistake of putting 567 instead of 576, which had major consequences.
This is why we designed the app to be connected to the terminal, and all the operations related to entering and processing the payments are now fully automated. A payment can be now divided into several partial payments in case the customer wants to pay with several payment cards with various payment limits.

02

Easy order process

An order can now be labelled with various statuses, such as “in transit to shop”, “at the shop”, “cancelled” or “handed over to customer”.
In the past, a complicated web interface had been used to monitor and enter these statuses, and operating it was rather time-consuming.
The app has simplified and automated the way the status of an order is changed, e.g. when the products are delivered to the shop, the employee uses the app to scan them and automatically add all the orders to the shop’s storeroom.

03

Returns

In the past, the system only allowed returns that were sent to Decathlon’s main warehouse which, however, was too costly in terms of transportation. The app automatically checks the status of the products in stock at the shop and makes it possible to store the order right in the shop’s storeroom.
By our estimates, tens of thousands of orders a year don’t have to be transported from and to the main warehouse anymore, which saves Decathlon a lot of money and is friendlier on the environment, as well.
